Mill Valley steps, lanes and paths

I just came back from a 5 hour meeting about getting 25 of these amazing steps, lanes and paths fixed up for our future generations. There were so many people there wanting safe routes for our kids, emergency routes in case of a fire and so many other reasons. Its such a part of our history, and more importantly the only way we can get away from cars and become a green community. One of the many advocates that showed up was Andy Peri from Marin County bicycle coalition, not only was he easy on the eyes, but so wonderful to connect with. I was really impressed with the young people that show up and spoke their mind about how these little paths keep them safe while going in to town and school. I don't now all the legalities, but I know all of the city council members passed what ever was needed to go forth. Yahoo, I feel good dandandanada

I called Victoria Talkington after the meeting. I've seen her for years but never new she was the reason that this whole movement is happening. I learned that she and a bunch of volunteers work on these paths together now. I can't wait to join them. What a great way to be apart of this community.

Styrofoam-Strike

I wanted to pass this along because this wheel doesn't need to be reinvented. He says it perfectly and I relate because I won't get to go food if it's in styrofoam. I am hard core for the most part. That Jamba juice gets me every time. I love their orange dream something, and then I cave. I have even called the head quarters because I didn't want to not have my drink( and I always forget my own cup), that's ideal I know. I knew that the San Fransisco stores don't use it, but because we don't have this law against it, they still use it in Mill Valley. I heard Mill Valley is on the move for banning styrofoam, but I have to check out whats going on with that. Any way read the letter from Dan below.

We're working to ban Styrofoam containers -- to stop them from ending up on our beaches and floating in the ocean. The campaign is heating up, thanks to the 11,000 e-mails you've sent to the governor.

I think it's time to pull out the big guns.

I've decided to stop going to chain restaurants -- starting with Jamba Juice -- that use polystyrene cups and cartons. Join me in taking part in our Styro-strike.

The truth is, I like Jamba Juice (especially the mango smoothie). But as a large chain with hundreds of locations, they could make a huge impact by switching to biodegradable cups.

So I'm not going to Jamba Juice. I'm going to tell them that I'm on Styro-strike.

Many of us already avoid Styrofoam containers when we eat out. Others of us live in cities where we've already banned the stuff. So let's band together and let Jamba Juice and the other Styro-trash makers know we mean business.

Our beaches deserve better. But how can we convince Jamba Juice and other restaurants to make the switch?

Speak to them in a language they understand -- money.

Let's make sure they hear us. Let's join together and go on Styro-strike -- starting with Jamba Juice:

Letter from Julia Butterfly Hill

Thank you for caring about the forests and the environment! I hear many similar questions from students and young people, so I have written this one letter to answer as many of those questions as I can think of.

My full name is Julia Butterfly Hill. My birthday is February 18, 1974. I have two brothers and no sisters. For 738 days, I lived on a platform made from reused scrap wood that was 6 feet by 8 feet. The roof and walls were made out of tarps. Living in a tree is fun sometimes, but sometimes it is scary and very hard - like in the storms. Also, it was hard to go for two years without being able to walk. I was in Luna from December 10, 1997 to December 18, 1999. I saw all kinds of animals including birds, mice, chipmunks, northern flying squirrels, deer and bears. I was not afraid of falling because I was VERY careful when I climbed around.

I am a vegan, which means I don't eat meat, fish, eggs or milk. I eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and grains. I try to eat organic foods as much as I can because they don't contain pesticides or chemicals. While I was in Luna, I cooked with a single-burner camping stove. I got water for drinking, cooking and keeping clean by collecting rainwater in my tarps. I used a bucket to go to the bathroom and slept in a sleeping bag.

These redwood forests are actually part of a rainforest. Did you know that over half of the world's animals live only in the rainforests? Luna is about 200 feet tall and over 1,000 years old! She was named Luna by activists who built the tree fort during the full moon of October, 1997. "Luna" means "the moon" in Spanish. My friends hiked food, mail, and supplies up the mountain to me and packed out waste. I had a bag attached to a rope that I lowered down to the ground, then my friends put the supplies in the bag and I pulled it to the top! I did not have too many visitors because I was so busy! I wrote a lot of letters, and did a lot of interviews. I listened to a radio with a crank that I wound up to power it. I used a phone for interviews. There were solar panels in Luna to power the batteries for my phone.

I came down from Luna in December, 1999 after we made an agreement with the Lumber Company to protect her and 3 acres of trees all around her. After I came down, someone tried to cut Luna down in November, 2000. They cut through almost 2/3 of Luna's trunk, but some really smart scientists, tree experts and lots of loving friends were able to protect her with metal cables and filled her cut with a special clay mixture that a friend of mine recommended to help Luna heal naturally. When I went to visit Luna last year, she was doing great.

Did you know that Redwood trees live in families? They have very shallow roots, but redwood trees are connected to each other through their root system. When you see a group of redwood trees, often they are all part of the same roots, and they feed one another that way. So Luna's family of trees living all around her is now feeding her and helping her to heal.

Today, I spend my time talking to lots and lots of people about making a difference in the world. I work hard to teach people about the environment and how they can help preserve our beautiful earth for future generations.

Ways You Can Help the Forests and the Earth!

Reuse all of your scraps of paper
Use paper made from 100% recycled paper.
Use paper made from other plants like hemp, kenaf and cotton.
Bring your own travel mug or bottle with you wherever you go so that you can get a drink in your own container instead of using paper or plastic cups.
Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins and paper towels.
Recycle everything that you cannot reuse.
Get your friends, parents and your school to do these things too!

Thanks for doing your part to protect the forests and the environment. We all make the difference and we are all part of the circle of life! Remember to treat everyone and everything with respect, and together, we will make this a better world!

Teens Turning Green, Project Green Prom

In the Corte Madera Village shopping center right across the walk way from Apple computer. Teens Turning Green, Project Green Prom opened today. This amazing teen organization promoting green living will totally inspire you. Project green is a nation wide campaign to support teens all over the globe to get together and green Prom night. I stopped by this beautiful store today and it was unbelievable. From vintage, slightly worn and re purposed prom wear and shoes for young women and men. Organic skin care from john masters organics, burts bees and very own Teens turning green skin line and many more. They are also featuring a green spa. for your prom night you can make an appointment to get your hair, makeup and nails done with all natural products. There is a teen lounge in the back and tons of events that you just can't miss. My self, josy Hamren and Aza Ziegler will be doing a re purpose and shoe covering workshop on May 10th. There will be fashion shows, teas and a mother and daughter photo event just to name a few. This happening is only for this prom season, so run over to the Village mall and support our youth and get totally inspired on how to do prom this year while nurturing our planet.

Lets ban Styrofoam together

Have you ever been at the beach and noticed all the tiny pieces of Styrofoam in the sand?

Or, have you ever worked to clean up a beach only to realize that nothing you could ever do would remove all those little pieces? Not to mention our land fill.That's why we need to ban single-use Styrofoam containers.

Join me and thousands of others who have called on the governor to back legislation that bans single-use Styrofoam containers, today.

Why not just ask the fast-food chains to use bio-degradable takeout containers? It just seems crazy that we would use something for 10 minutes and then have it float in the ocean, or lie in the sand, for hundreds and hundreds of years.

The benefits simply do not outweigh the costs.

Styrofoam (expanded and extruded polystyrene foam) is getting more and more pervasive in the marine environment. When littered or blown from trashcans, it is carried from streets and through storm drains out into the ocean. It breaks into smaller and smaller pieces that wash onto the shore, and which animals mistake for food.

Styrofoam has not been around long enough to know its true life. Most scientists agree that it will degrade to increasingly smaller sizes but never disappear.

Let's ban single-use Styrofoam takeout containers before they cause any more damage. Please write a response, its so quick and easy, to tell the governor that you want to take back your beaches.

Egg Dyeing

Experimenting with plant dye, was so much fun. Blueberry's, Turmeric, onion skins and cinnamon. We played with tape and bees wax. The Turmeric was spice form, blueberry's , cinnamon and the onion skins I simmered for an hour. I have been so inspired by my friend Deepa and Sasha. My family went to Deepa's workshop at the Botanical gardens in Berkeley. She has put together some wonderful programs there. This added so much depth to our family's tradition of dyeing eggs. I have been taking out books from our public library to do research. The possibility's are endless. It's so exciting!!!

Youth Making A Difference

Summer 2009

I invite your child to come spend a summer week with me. I'm a mother of three, an artist and green business owner native to Mill Valley. Sustainability is my passion.

Campers will create art with recycled materials, bake bread with local, organic ingredients, dye fabric with plants, clean the creeks, care for our neighborhood, visit green businesses, and meet other local youth who are making a difference. Camp activities will be fun, democratically decided, and sustainability- oriented. Architecture, home decor, Arts and crafts, our schools, our communities, ourselves and our families. This camp is all about the solution and how we can a play a part in the green revolution.

Camp focus: Your child will feel safe, nurtured and empowered as we explore and create together. Days will include circle sharing, social and community service and a profound environmental awareness, with the guiding principle that each of us is unique and has a special gift to bring to the world.

In 2000, leaders from the United States and 190 other nations came together to develop a set of eight goals to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015.

On April 4, come to the Depot Square in Mill Valley to educate yourself on the goals, the progress that has been made, and how you can join the in on the effort!

There will be a "scavenger hunt" to "win" money that will be donated to the Millennium Development Goal of your choice!

All age groups are welcome, the scavenger hunt are for the ages from 5 to 18. This is truly a family event

Come to the Botanical gardens at Berkeley

This is an invite from my lovely friend Deepa to come visit the Botanical gardens at Berkeley where she is the cooridinator for tours and programs

Everything is bursting at the seems at the garden. i truly encourage you all to come see the beauty and bounty-- including the first bloom of a 25 year old rhododendron, a bee hive and the fruiting of cute overload worthy pineapple!

i'm really excited to share with you an exhibit that is opening tomorrow at the garden of fiber & dye plants from around the world. this year we have the beautiful additions of judi petite's plant paint posters, which are just exquisite, plenty of fresh plants, a special edible dye table and new textiles that i brought from india.

along with the exhibit are three classes that are going to be really fun. i would love to see you there.

on sunday march 22 from 10am-4pm kathleen hubbard will be leading a pine-needle basketry workshop. we will be making beautiful baskets using Georgia pine (Pinus palustris) needles sticthed with raffia or waxed linen. we'll also be incorporating natural dyes into our baskets! the cost is $65, $60 botanical garden members and well worth it for 6 hours of expert instruction and all materials

on saturday march 28th from 1pm-4pm my beautiful friend and amazing artist Ashley Helvey is going to be teaching a felting workshop using plant dyed wool. i'm not really sure what else to say about this except that it is going to be so fun. i first felted with ashley in the fall and i was so amazed by how rewarding the process is. this one costs $50, $40 botanical garden members and includes all materials.

for the kiddies: on sunday april 5th there will be two sessions of naturally dyed easter eggs from 10 am-11am and from 1pm-2pm! last year we had such a blast and i'm so happy to repeat this program. i'll be introducing children to the joy of natural dyes while they make their own patterns on eggs with brilliant plant based-colors. $20, $15 members for one adult, one child and all materials.

-- also, not a part of this series, but also a wonderful class that i'm glad to host will be a contemplative drawing workshop that can be taken as a 1part or 2 part class on saturday april 11th and saturday may 16th. sylvia la will be leading contemplative drawing through the garden. it will be a great chance to wander the paths, take the time to really observe the contours and textures in the garden and use drawing as a tool for contemplation. please come! no previous drawing experience necessary these classes are $30, $25 members; $50, $40 members if you sign up for both!

YES, I have great news today. Just a few phone calls and a little bit of begging. How was I going to get our schools to use 100% post consumer paper. I was supprized that other people weren't running to the principles office with this one. This is what I found. The good news is that most the public schools in Mill Valley support our local printer and office supplier Mill Valley Services. Not only does Mill Valley services offer amazing paper Aspen 100 ( no trees were were cut down), but they also are one of the few distributers for New leaf paper another local business. I found out that all the schools order from the same place and only a few are ordering 100% recycled, post consumer paper. We have to change that.

I don't know how most school districts do it, but I guess Mill Valley schools each do their own ordering. I am sure the price is always the deciding factor ( at least that's what I gathered by talking to people today). The few extra penny's more is worth everything to our kids. With programs like Cool the earth. I hoped that we could back this up and choose healthy solutions in our schools. As I found out today , its very simple, just choose Aspen 100 Item #cas5054922

Martin and Obama

Martin Luther kings day was coming and I knew that I wanted to do something with my family. The idea that we were about to inaugurate our new President Barack Obama the next day was almost hard for me to bare. I had been thinking and waiting for this miracle for a long time. I had a lot of anxiety about the whole thing. After receiving an email from Michelle Obama asking all Americans to join together for a day of service, I finally felt like I was actually a part of this country. My goal was to shoot over to this event taking place at the civic center, it was in stead of the traditional Martin Luther King march. It was totally over by the time we got there. Most of the people that usually participated went to Washington for the big day, so it wasn't a huge turn out. We had to celebrate this historical day, hoping to hang out all day, have a sleep over at my sisters and join other people downtown for the inauguration. It was so fantastic. I bought my first flag ever and was proud to finally wave it with dignity. It inspired me how Betsy Ross made the first American flag out of hemp. I will make them for 4th of July.

If you haven't been to the Martin Luther King fountain at the Y erba buena center its a must. We go as a family a lot and always get an eclair at Papa beards across the street. I enjoyed so many thing about these two days. Being with my kids, being able to touch the words of "I have a dream" and feeling like his words made so much sense now. With Barack Obama as our president and the words YES WE CAN he gave to us to teach our children is beyond anything I could ever dream of.

Sometimes I don't even attempt to bring ideas to the table at my school, because I don't feel very supported. I need to do it any way. Finding and Sharing sites like Building green schools empowers me to go forth. I know times are different now with our economic crisis. My friend Stephanie lent me a Cd from the spiritual cinema circle . I enjoy these independent films that reveal the heights and depths of human experience. The one that I particularly like is called Ryan's Well, a short documentary about a boy that was assigned a school project to help build a well in Africa. He didn't stop there. With his amazing heart and determination, this boy continues to raise funds to build wells in underdeveloped countries around the world. Ryan joined forces this summer with H2O Africa Foundation, founded by Matt Damon. I hope every child can see this film; it is truly inspirational.

Wow, there is nothing like knowing there are people out there making a difference as a community and right in our own backyard nonetheless! Yes, Fairfax- proud to call my sister community. Birthing my girl Annabel in our home in Fairfax 7 years ago, having friends and family there, and just feeling connected to all of the caring earthy people that live there- I couldn't help not googling it as I lay here in bed. INTERNATIONAL WALK-TO-SCHOOL DAY!!!!!

International Walk-to-School Day is by far- my favorite school event. It happens on Wednesday October 3rd. It's so beautiful to see everybody out walking and riding their bikes together. Once a year is not enough, but with some communication we can work on bringing our kids together on a daily basis. We are all doing it for our Mama Earth, but it is such a great way to be in our community and with our kids. Being a bit lazy by nature I have been known to run out the door late thinking I have to drive 6 blocks. It's something that I am ashamed to say, but true. I decided this year no more driving for my family unless we absolutely have to. Making that commitment has empowered myself and my kids. It feels so good to take action in this way. What a blessing. This blog was created to be a public space for sharing, inspiring, and modivating public schools to be green. I lay awake at night so often wondering how I can be a part of the most important movement in history. Caring about our earth and our world community in small and consistant steps towards a life full of smiles, self respect, and loving kindness.

This work can become overwhelming when you consider how much really needs to be done, so much so that it is almost numbing. "Be the change you wish to see in the world," is what Gandhi said ... well this is my way of beginning to do just that- this blog is me reaching out to you.

Thinking back to my childbirth experiences, the wisdom of knowing that billions of women had given birth before me got me through the most difficult transitions and perhaps now I am looking to that wisdom again. I know right here in Marin County there are countless intelligent, huge-hearted people that have done amazing things to nurture and restore the place we call home.
